TOPEKA | Rep. Ben Hodge of Overland Park has some misgivings about the 113-member, nonprofit Johnson County Community College Foundation.

Hodge, a member of the college’s Board of Trustees, said the school provides $300,000 a year to the foundation’s operation but has no say on who serves on the foundation’s board.

He noted, for example, that Leawood’s 36 members make up about a third of the foundation’s membership but only 6 percent of the county’s population.

So, Hodge tried to amend an appropriations bill Thursday requiring foundation members to be approved by the Board of Trustees, which oversees the community college.

“Basically, this is a social club in Johnson County,” he said, referring to the foundation. “I don’t mind social clubs, but not at taxpayer expense.”

His effort failed on a voice vote.
